The ‘Old Souls‘ series continues its celebration of the most amazing music being made today with ‘Old Souls Part V‘.  The focus this time out is emotional impact: music that will break your heart even as it soothes it, fuel you up for the fight and remind you why we fight.  It coalesces around certain sounds: echoing piano, woozy samples and synths, deep bass, pensive strings, tight rhythms, clattering electronics: all tying together wide-ranging music rooted in hip-hop, jazz, electronic sounds, singer-songwriter and art rock.  As with previous volumes, this is music mostly made by young people who have total mastery of the music of the past, and employ it toward adventurously futurist ends.  I find ‘Part V‘ is especially entrancing, playing out in four segments to form one ‘feature-length’ emotional journey.  This music moves me and excites me more than any new music has in over two decades–this is all-time-great art, just when the world needs it most.
